This tour offers a rare opportunity to connect with the Hmong and other ethnic communities, exploring their daily lives, traditions, and the charm of remote villages surrounded by breathtaking mountains and lush jungles. From learning traditional crafts to trekking through scenic landscapes, this experience provides an authentic glimpse into Laos’ rich culture and natural beauty.
Day 1: Luang Prabang – Ban Bor Hae 2 – Ban Bor Hae 1
Your journey begins at 9:00 AM with a pickup from your hotel in Luang Prabang. Travel along the Mekong River on Route 13, passing picturesque rice paddies and ethnic villages on your way to Ban Bor Hae 2, a Hmong village about an hour’s drive away. Upon arrival, your guide will take you through the village, sharing insights into the social, cultural, and economic life of the Hmong people. You’ll then cross a river on foot and walk through teak plantations and primary forests to reach a lowland rice farm. Here, you’ll have the chance to cook traditional dishes for lunch under the guidance of your guide and enjoy your meal in a serene setting inside a traditional hut.
In the afternoon, the adventure continues to Ban Bor Hae 1, a village home to both Lao and Khmu ethnic communities. You’ll engage in activities such as preparing bamboo strings and weaving bamboo baskets under the instruction of local experts. Additionally, you can try riding the “bamboo giraffe”, a traditional toy with cultural significance. In the evening, settle into a local family’s home for dinner, where you’ll enjoy traditional dishes, sip local whisky, and perhaps join in singing traditional songs with your hosts.
Day 2: Exploring Ban Bohe Village and Trekking to Ban Longlan
Begin the day with a guided walk around Ban Bohe Village, where you’ll interact with locals and learn about their daily routines. After breakfast, join fishermen along the riverbank to learn traditional fishing methods or participate in seasonal farming activities. Together with your guide, you’ll prepare a riverside picnic lunch using freshly caught fish, creating a truly unique culinary experience.
After lunch, embark on an uphill trek to Ban Longlan, a remote Hmong village located in a high mountain valley. As you trek, you’ll pass through lush plantations of rubber, teak, and upland rice, as well as small jungles and scenic cliff viewpoints. Upon arrival at Ban Longlan, check into your homestay and explore the village, where you can try sewing Hmong textiles, practicing traditional archery, or learning about local conservation efforts. For an extra adventure, you can hike to a nearby cliff for panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Dinner will be served at the homestay, offering a taste of authentic Hmong cuisine and hospitality.
Day 3: Hmong Cultural Exploration and Jungle Trekking
Your final day begins with a guided walk through the village, giving you a closer look at Hmong daily life and the chance to engage with the community. After breakfast, participate in traditional Hmong activities such as archery, spinning top games, or visiting a remote village school to learn about Lao education. Later in the morning, embark on a trek into the jungle, where local villagers will guide you in identifying medicinal plants and share insights into traditional Hmong healing practices. You’ll also learn about geomancy, an integral aspect of Hmong culture that influences the selection of burial sites.
In the afternoon, enjoy a locally prepared lunch before returning to Luang Prabang via tuk-tuk, a journey that takes approximately 1.5 hours. For those seeking even more adventure, the trip can be extended for additional exploration.
